It’s OK if you are scared right now or if your anxiety level has gone through the roof. We’re dealing with a pandemic and it can be frightening. There are so many unknowns. What will happen next? How will this affect your health, your family, your friends, your job, or finances?

First, let me say that my heart goes out to you if you’ve lost someone to the virus or if you or a loved one are ill. Of course, the pandemic affects more than just our health. Our lives are being turned upside down by this virus, from the most trivial things to how we perceive ourselves and life in general.

Why Do We Need Social Distance in Time of Pandemic?

Social distancing is the wisest thing you can do to prevent the spread of a contagious illness. The sooner you do it, the better. Such restrictions are good for us. They slow down the spread of the coronavirus, making it possible for hospitals and clinics to manage the number of patients that need their help. It can feel like an extreme measure. It’s times of crisis like these when you need your social safety net the most. But it’s crucial now to prioritize the well being of the community versus individual needs.

I’ve seen how the pandemic has affected our lives. Some dear friends of mine had to cancel a family wedding because they planned to have over 50 people attend. Other people have to be apart from their family or face the stress of losing their job or not having a savings account. Everyone I know is reconsidering aspects of their life that will be affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Now the San Francisco Bay Area is experiencing a “shelter in place” mandate. You can’t leave home except for essentials like healthcare, shopping for food or supplies, caring for family members, and outdoor exercise. Already the schools have been closed. People have to work from home or can’t work at all. The stock market is crashing with so much uncertainty in the air. How can you deal with so much chaos?

How to Turn a Crisis into an Opportunity to Better Yourself

It’s a difficult time for everyone right now and anxiety levels are rising. What can you do to avoid an emotional crisis in a time of the Covid-19 pandemic?

The best way to cope with chaos is to become very clear about who you are and how you can best take care of yourself. Put things into perspective by asking yourself a few questions. What are your values? How can you use this crisis to develop your best self? Can this pandemic help you to build your self-confidence?

Let me give you an example. Do you want to hurt others by exposing them to a virus that you may not be aware that you are carrying? Of course not. Since we’re all in this together, taking care of your health means taking care of everyone else as well. This isn’t just about washing your hands frequently. It’s about staying away from others if you’re ill and reducing potential exposure opportunities. Social distancing can be tough, but we need to protect the most vulnerable amongst us. It’s not just about us anymore, it’s about the community.

Or think about it like this. How will panicking about the pandemic help you now? It might freak you out and make you feel bad about how you’re handling everything. Instead of spending your time panicking, think about what constructive things you can do with that time.

What about calling your family and friends to stay in touch or ask them about their problems? It’s a good way to combat loneliness or feelings of isolation. Have you been meaning to eat better or to exercise more but you just couldn’t find the time? Well, now you have all the time in the world. Are there 5 things on your to-do list that you just never seem to finish? It’s time to get started on them!

By focusing on being your best self, you’re giving yourself the chance to handle things better. Making healthy choices whether or not you’re in a crisis is something that can build your self-esteem.
